Water Facts

​

  • An average family in America uses 10,583 gallons of water per month!

  • If a faucet runs for 4 minutes a day, it dispenses 4,000 gallons per year.

  • If you do two loads of laundry a week, you will use 5,000 gallons of water per year.

  • If you took a 15 minute shower every other day, you will use 19,000 gallons per year.

  • If a toilet is flushed 15 times per day, it uses 33,000 gallons per year.

  • Low-flow appliances can cut these numbers dramatically.

  • A dripping faucet can leak 20 gallons of water a day.

  • A leaking toilet can use 90,000 gallons of water in a month.

  • A garden hose can put out 18 gallons of water per minute.

  • Nationally, roughly 4% of total electric use in the USA is for pumping and treating potable water and wastewater.

  • Hydropower in Arizona requires additional water due to high evaporation from reservoirs. Consider that it takes about 65 gallons of water to generate a single kWh of electricity.

  • The average Yavapai household consumes 1,170 kWh per month equating to 14,040 kWh annually.

  • There are 325,851 gallons of water in one acre foot. 

There are many legitimate reasons why the usage may increase during summer months. 

 

Lawns, plants, gardens, trees, and large animals are typically the reasons for large increases in water use during the summer months.  Also, most people shower more frequently during the summer, wash their cars and clothes more, children play in the water more, etc. It is not uncommon for water use to double during the summer over the winter months.

 

Drip systems can use less water than a garden hose IF a pressure reducer is installed on the line AND it is inspected daily.  A broken dripper can dispense 5 gallons per minute of water or more.

 

If you have a lawn, make sure to sprinkle in the early mornings before the wind begins to blow or late at night after it calms.  Also, fertilize your lawns according to recommendations found on the fertilizer bags to help the lawn stay greener, decreasing the need to water more.

There will never be a charge for notifying us of a water leak or emergency. However, if the leak is on the customer's side of the water meter, then the customer is responsible for the water and all necessary repairs.
